To understand why critical thinking matters so much today, it helps to begin with two modes of thought. System 1 is fast, automatic, and intuitive. It helps us respond quickly, make snap judgments, and move efficiently through daily decisions. System 2 is slower, more deliberate, and more effortful. It helps us pause, examine assumptions, weigh evidence, and think things through with greater care.
Both have their place. But in the age of AI, System 2 has become more important than ever.
AI can generate answers, summaries, and recommendations in seconds. And because those outputs often sound polished and confident, it becomes easy to accept them too quickly. That is the risk. When speed and fluency are mistaken for sound judgment, thinking becomes shallower just when it needs to become sharper.
This is where System 2 matters. It helps us slow down enough to ask: Does this make sense? What might be missing? Is this truly the best answer, or simply the fastest one? In a world shaped by AI, the real advantage will not come from using it blindly, but from using it thoughtfully.
That is why our Critical Thinking with AI programme is designed to help learners think more clearly, question more effectively, and use AI in ways that strengthen, rather than replace, good judgment.
